Mendelssohn – Elijah – 1907

During the first quarter of 1907, the Gramophone Company recorded a substantial proportion of Mendelssohn’s Elijah. The choice of singers was not consistent, featuring variously Eleanor Jones-Hudson, Florence Venning, Elizabeth Dews, Carrie Tubb, Ernest Pike, Edward Lloyd, Peter Dawson and Robert Radford. The orchestra was presumably the usual studio affair, and the conductor is unnamed. The choir is named as Stedman’s choir – this was a children’s choir founded by John Stedman in 1877. When he died in 1903, it continued, run by his widow, and by his assistant Sydney Baynes.
